Don't Have Space for a Dollhouse?

Neither do I!
Like most people, space in my house is at a premium. I don't have the room to dedicate much square footage to dollhouses. And I'd rather spend my money on actual miniatures (and food) instead of the tables to display them on.
When I first started making miniatures, I plopped them haphazardly on my fireplace mantel, tiny HO-scale houses next to Barbie-sized washstands sitting on 1:12 rugs. But it wasn't long before I ran out of room there, and my cats discovered the joys of knocking over little houses. So, here are some of the ways that I've continued to fill my home up with little things.
Instead of dollhouses, I usually stick with room boxes. For the uninitiated, room boxes are just what they sound like: boxes that form a single room display, kind of like a book nook. They can be as plain on the outside as an undecorated cubby or as decorated and involved as a corner store. They're great for sticking on a shelf because you don't miss anything by never seeing the back. They're also a fantastic introduction to the world of miniature building since they're a much lower time and cost commitment than a full-on dollhouse.
Another thing I do is display my individual miniatures in a divided display case hung on my wall. This is ideal for me because it doesn't use up any table space or shelf space. My display case is an antique set of pigeonholes, but I also have a whole post office box case as well. (I have a problem, ok?)
And finally, I also like to build displays into frames. For this, a relatively flat display like the wall of a building is ideal so you don't have to find a shadowbox frame. An 8x10" frame would be perfect for an entryway diorama featuring one of my doors!
