History of the Klismos Chair

Like all of my kits, the Klismos Chair kit is based off a real piece of furniture. But what exactly is a klismos chair?

Klismos chairs, or klismoi, originated in Ancient Greece. While no original ancient klismos chair still exist, they're commonly seen in art from the Hellenistic period and earlier. In images and statues, they are shown with curved front and back legs, and a high, deep back rest.

The form was resurrected during the Neoclassical period of the late-18th and early-19th century, when archaeology of ancient sites created a renewed interest in the classical period. This revival started in France, with the paintings of Jacques-Louis David and quickly spread.

Klismos chairs were revived again during the Art Deco period, where their simple lines played into the geometric forms popular in the style. And I predict we may see another wave with the rise of maximalism!
